The four-day festival Planet Dom, taking place from November 21 to 24 in Split, is organized by the Multimedia Cultural Center in partnership with the Platformator of Dom Mladih and the Youth Associations Coalition, under the patronage of the City of Split. It brings musical and interdisciplinary performances, club nights, discussions, video screenings, installations, workshops, and other forms and expressions of progressive contemporary culture, offering a cross-section of the activities of this important cultural institution in Split.
Dom Mladih (Youth House) was designed as far back as 1977, originally envisioned as the Home of Socialist Youth, a large multifunctional cultural complex. Construction began to accommodate the Mediterranean Games held in Split in 1979. However, as often happens in this region, after political leaders boasted of significant investments in a brighter future, emphasizing their commitment to youth, the project was halted in 1984 after only the rough construction phase was completed. The building, which was only partially operational, became a significant financial, political, and even safety issue for the city. According to available official data, the building stood empty and without purpose for the next fifteen years.
A turning point came in 1994 when alternative artists occupied the Dom through the Art Squat project, following a three-month cleaning effort voluntarily joined by many young people from Split. In 1997, the City of Split established the Youth Cultural Center, a public institution for creativity and cultural, technical, and artistic performances, which served as the managing body of Dom Mladih until 2005.
